Email blacklist checking

If you have noticed your email is not getting through to some people on a consistent basis it may be that your outgoing email server has been blacklisted.

To check if your email domain has been blacklisted use the following online tool:

DVD Region Unlocking

At present most DVD devices and products are region locked. What this means is that DVD users are prevented from viewing DVD content that has been locked to another region. If you live in New Zealand and you wish to buy DVDs from Amazon.com in the USA it is quite likely the disk will not be viewable on your hardware in New Zealand. I, and a huge community of other DVD users, see this as an infringement of basic consumer rights. The following links (and the web sites these links point to will show you how to get around these DVD issues.

Act! v6.0.3 Update

If you run Sage Act! 6 and wish to update it to 6.0.3 here is the link to the download. You can update it through the built in tool, but if you want to run the file locally it’s a real mission finding this update file. I am running Act! v6 on Linux I had to install it a few times to get it all working as I wanted. This meant running the built in update three or four times. Whatever server the updater connects to seems to have a really slow connection to New Zealand where I am.

To download the update go here: http://download.act.com/ACT!603Update.exe

Great Anti Spam technique

Spam is a huge problem on the Internet. Anyone with an Internet account is well aware of this issue.
One way to deal with spam is by filtering it out before or after you download your email. I use InBoxer for this purpose.

The shortcoming of simply filtering spam is that it has very little impact on the spammers themselves and therefore makes their job no harder. The result is that they just keep on sending out spam. There is another way…

One way to thwart the attempts of email harvesters (those the run “spiders” to scan sites for email addresses) is the spam spider loop technique. What the heck is that? Well, it works like this. You put a link on your page that goes to a page with a list of random fake email addresses. At the end of that list is a link that goes to a similar page of more random fake email addresses. At the end of that list is yet another link… ad infinitum. This puts the spider into an infinite loop.

I am not sure what impact this has at the end of the day. But I think it is a neat idea. If you wish to participate in fighting back against spammers in this way then check out the following:

Nitro PDF Professional

There are many ways to create Acrobat PDF files. The expensive way is by using Adobe Acrobat Professional. Unless you plan on making high-grade Press Ready postscript PDF files for offset print production (and the like) it is likely the pricey Acrobat Professional is not required for your PDF creation requirements. There are many other tools available, some free and some you pay for. One I found today is Nitro PDF.

Nitro PDF Professional is a high-quality, affordable PDF creation and editing application that puts the full power of PDF within everyone’s reach. In addition to providing the basics — powerful, robust PDF creation at an extremely affordable price — Nitro PDF Professional includes the full range of top-shelf PDF functionality, opening up new vistas for current and new users of PDF.

The investment is US$89.10

Backups — Cheap, fast, and easy

Having a backup of your important files can be essential should your computer fail and result in data loss. Backups that take a long time or are difficult to perform can lead to them them not being done as often as one should.
There are various backup solutions I recommend to my IT clients. The most common advice I give these days is to use a USB 2.0 Key Stick or a USB 2.0 portable external hard-drive. With 2GB capacity USB Sticks now at relatively low prices, and 4GB not far behind them this is, for many small business owners and home users, a viable backup option when your data does not exceed this limit. I’ve found that for most small business that simply use a computer as a work tool for Word Processing, Spreadsheets, Emails, attachments, PDF files, etc., seldom is 4GB exceeded when it comes to their data.

To those clients that do have larger amounts of data I recommend getting a small external hard-disk. Capacities in excess of 400GB can be achieved at a relatively low cost. The advantage of these two options is speed and convenience.

Saying goodbye to tapes: Tapes have always been the traditional back-up method for many years now. I’ve always found them slow, tedious, an cumbersome. The advantage that tapes always had was their high capacity and relatively low price for the capacity achieved. This advantage is not really an issue any more because you can pick up a high capacity external hard-drive for less than the cost of a tape backup system.
Other options: CD-R and DVD-R have become a common alternative to tapes in recent years, but these two are relatively slow and require the management of media.
Once you have the appropriate hardware (an external hard-drive or a USB Memory Stick), the next step is finding an application that will handle your backups for you. There are a number I recommend to clients, some of which are free. These are listed below. This list will expand and evolve over time.
