Free file comparison

If you work with web development or coding of some kind you surely know that automated file comparrison is a handy and time saving thing to have on hand. There are many programs available for this function both free and commercial. The editor I use (PSPad) has a fairly good comparison toolset in it. If you are looking for a standalone and feature rich comparison program you may like to check out WinMerge.

WinMerge is an Open Source visual text file differencing and merging
tool for Win32 platforms. It is highly useful for determing what has
changed between project versions, and then merging changes between
versions.

Features

  • Visual differencing and merging of text files
  • Flexible editor with syntax highlighting, line numbers and word-wrap
  • Handles DOS, UNIX and MAC text file formats
  • Unicode support
  • Difference pane shows current difference in two vertical panes
  • Location pane shows map of files compared
  • Highlights differences inside the lines
  • File filters in directory pane
  • Moved lines detection in file compare pane
  • Shell Integration
  • Rudimentary Visual SourceSafe and Rational ClearCase integration

Free HDD folder size manager

One particular application I find very useful for helping me maintain my hard drives is a program that present my HDD data in a tree format with folder sizes showing. The program I use for this is called TreeSize Professional and is available here. The personal version costs US$19.95 whilst the pro version sells for US$44.95. Some people may not want to dish out the dollars for the advanced features these application provide. If that is the case I suggest checking out JDiskReport.

JDiskReport
JDiskReport enables you to understand how much space the files and directories consume on your disk drives, and it helps you find obsolete files and folders.

The tool analyses your disk drives and collects several statisticswhich you can view as overview charts and details tables.

This is ad- and nag-free uncrippled binary multi-platform softwarethat is free of charge and that never expires. It is available here.

IZArc archiver

For a long time now I have been using and recommending ZipGenius as my preferred multi-format and free archiver. An archiver is what handles files with extensions such as .zip, .arc, .rar, etc..

Today I came across the free archiver from http://www.izarc.org/.

This archiver handles just about every format known to man, including .iso images and .cab files. Here’s the full list:

7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CDI, CAB, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MBF, MDF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO

ZipGenius also handles a very comprehensive array of formats (perhaps more than IZArc). So really, at the end of the day it’s a matter of choosing which program you find easiest, quickest, and nicest to work with. I shall leave that decision in your hands.

Info on ZipGenius is available here: http://www.zipgenius.it/

Free Windows Calculator

I quite often use a calculator on my computer. Until now I have put up with using the built in Microsoft Windows Calculator. It does everything I want, yet it has one important feature lacking. It does not allow me to set it to “stay on top” of the other windows. Pretty much the only time I use the PC calculator is when I need to calculate data for something else I am working on, on the computer. So not being able to set the calculator to stay on top is a real hassle.

I have taken a look around at the free alternative calculators. Here’s some info on what I found (this list will grow beyond what’s on there now):

Moffsoft Freecalc

Link: http://www.moffsoft.com/freecalc.htm
This calculator does the trick nicely. It has all the basic functions one might need from a calculator, and most importantly it has a “stay on top” mode.

Moffsoft FreeCalc is a great replacement for your existing Windows® calculator. We took the standard Windows calculator functionality and added the following features:

  • Adjustable calculator size - Make it any size you want and Moffsoft FreeCalc will remember the size and position next time you use it.
  • Tape - Save, print, or clear the simulated paper history tape.
  • Color schemes - Select a color combination or use your Windows color settings.
  • New keys - Clear Tape {CT}, double zero {00}, triple zero {000}, and memory subtract {M-} keys have been added.
  • Visible memory value - You’ll always know what’s in memory because it’s displayed on the calculator status bar.
  • Option settings - Flat buttons, always on top, tray icon, run on startup, and hiding the tape are some of the calculator options.
  • Digit groupings - Number groupings for easy to read numbers.
  • International support - Digit grouping and decimal point characters change based on your regional settings.
  • Tray icon - Turn on the tray icon for quick and easy access.
  • System requirements - Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP

Free disk space analyzer

Today I was looking for a way to view the amount of space each folder/directory was taking up on a clients rather full computer. There are many licensed applications that do this. I wanted a free one.

The following application did the job perfectly and I highly recommend it:

TreeSize Free V1.78

Every hard disk is too small if you just wait long enough. TreeSize Free tells you where precious space has gone to. TreeSize Free can be started from the context menu of a folder or drive and shows you the size of this folder, including its subfolders. You can expand this folder in Explorer-like style and you will see the size of every subfolder. Scanning is done in a thread, so you can already see results while TreeSize Free is working. The space, which is wasted by the file system can be displayed and the results can be printed in a report. TreeSize Free is freeware for Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP.

It can be downloaded from here. The publishers website is here.

FreeMind - free mind mapping software

I am a great advocate of mind mapping. I’ve utilising mind maps since I was a teenager at school when I was taking notes in class. If you are not sure what mind mapping is then find out more on the Wikipedia. Essentially mind mapping is a non-linear way of organising information that more closely resembles the way your brain stores data and makes associations between units of data. Working with information externally (outside your brain) in a way that is similar to how your brains works with that data internally has a lot of benefits.

For the last few years I have been using an excellent mind mapping application called MindManager. It costs a couple of hundred US$, so it ain’t cheap. It also won’t run on Linux and Mindjet (the developer of MindManager) indicated to me they have no intention of porting it over to Linux.

Now there is another option… free and with cross-platform support.

Freemind

“FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map) software written in Java. The recent development has hopefully turned it into high productivity tool. We are proud that the operation and navigation of FreeMind is faster than that of MindManager because of one-click “fold / unfold” and “follow link” operations. So you want to write a completely new metaphysics? Why don’t you use FreeMind? You have a tool at hand that remarkably resembles the tray slips of Robert Pirsig, described in his sequel to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance called Lila. Do you want to refactor your essays in a similar way you would refactor software? Or do you want to keep personal knowledge base, which is easy to manage? Why don’t you try FreeMind? Do you want to prioritize, know where you are, where you’ve been and where you are heading, as Stephen Covey would advise you? Have you tried FreeMind to keep track of all the things that are needed for that?”

Main Page - FreeMind - free mind mapping software

Cross compatability?

MindManager is able to import mind maps made with Freemind. There is an add-on freely available here on the MindJet site.

Freemind also has some capability to import and export MindManager maps. More info can be found here.

Desktop blog editor - Zoundry

This particular post is being written in a free WYSIWYG blog editor called Zoundry. So far it looks pretty good—in fact I would say it is the best offline blog editor I have tested. Here’s some of the key things I think it has going for it:

  • It has a good range of dictionaries for spell checking, such as the UK English that is missing from w.Blogger. The languages options built into it are English UK, US, CA; Dutch; French; Swiss French; German; Swiss German; Italian, Norwegian; Russian; Spanish; Swedish. It will automatically download the dictionary data file for which ever language your choose.
  • Very feature rich. The only feature I like to have on hand which is not here is the ability to manually define the Wordpress post slug. I’ve not found an offline editor that allows me to do this as of yet.
  • Nice interface, with great support for multiple blogs, blog accounts, blogging systems, etc.
  • Great storage system for existing and unpublished entries.
  • A built in code (XHTML) validation tool. It’s a little slow but does the trick for those that want to know their XHTML status.
  • A nice preview system that allows you to import or download your template
  • It has a localisation function in it, which I’ve not tested as the default is English but I assume non-English users can download localisation files in their language.
  • You are able to specify a “media repository” where Zoundry will upload your media files to for linking to from within your blog entries.

Zoundry also provide an affiliate sales system. Essentially Zoundry is an intermediary for a range of affiliate providers. The current options are Amazon.com, Buy.com, and Cooking.com. I understand they will be adding more in the future. The Zoundry editor is set up to allow the easy insertion of items from any of these affiliate stores. You then get a percentage of the affiliate commission and Zoundry keep some for themselves. It ranges from 70% - 80% for you and 20% - 30% for them. Might come in handy for those that want an easy solution to reviewing items on the net and generating affiliate sales.

For now Zoundry is my preferred offline blog editor. The others I have tried are w.Blogger (nice features but no UK English spell checking), and Blogjet (UK English but bare minimum of formating features).

UPDATE: 14 Nov 2006

Zoundry continues to be my prefered desktop blog editor.

If you would like a way to easily post blog entries via Zoundry from your browser check out the various browser extensions here.
